Some usefull wedding website links

2009/03/06 by Francois MAROT

Since there won’t be anything to be seen about GniddewThere (my upcoming “your wedding community” website) anytime soon, I chose to share with you the most useful links I know for creating wedding websites. I haven’t tested myself all the sites, but given what I red, they seem interesting.

All my links are available on my public foxmark page (Foxmark is a tool allowing to synchronize and share your bookmarks). The next time I bookmark an interesting wedding website, the list will be automatically updated. Regarding wedding links, they are separated into “Best”, which I find the most interesting ones, and “Classic” which are interesting too but not as much (less functionalities, you have to pay, etc…)

Please, give me your feedback and start the discussion about  which sites are the more useful for you, which features don’t exist yet but would be great and anything you want about wedding websites.

Why I quit my jobs and starts GniddewThere

2009/02/16 by Francois MAROT

Where was I ?

I was a software engineer at Avisto, working for Thales Alenia Space on very interesting projects where I was responsible for writing/testing/integrating softwares on a 100+ satellites control center. That was very exciting. New features had always to be added, everyday we faced new problems or added requirements. And I had the pleasure to work with wonderful people, passionate about their job and smart.

Why did I quit then ?!

Violaine, my girlfriend, found a job in Versailles (near Paris) so either we lived separate, broke up, or I followed her. First 2 solutions were no options so I had to leave my job at Thales. In the meantime, I had a growing idea of building a website dedicated to future groom/brides and a growing interest for entrepreneurship. After all, maybe it was the right time to “take a break”, try to create my own project, and see what happens. If it is successful then good ! If it is not, then what ?! I’ll have lost a few month of my life working on a deadend ? But at least it would have been MY project and… I would have tried !

Why a wedding website by the way ?

I recently saw all my best friends getting married. I saw it was a LOT of work for them to prepare their D-day (or W-day ?!). This included preparing the seating plan. But this was not always without a hitch… I was the witness of an attendee who refused at the last minute to be seated next to another attendee. On your wedding day, you have so much to think about that I imagine you would prefer not to encounter this kind of problems ! Moreover, as we organized the bachelor & bachelorette party with my friends, I realized it was hard to agree all on the activities, to find a date. We were like always sending emails, to all our friends. Our inbox were exploding, no one was reading all the messages, & as the bachelor(ette) party day approches, it was getting a real mess ! The same problem arose for preparing original wedding presents: first it was hard to find original ideas, then hard to find a consensus with all the friends participating. With all this in mind and some ideas of how all this could be better organized thanks to the use of the web 2.0 (or whatever you call it), I felt something had to be done.

So where can I use this “GniddewThere” website ?

Oh oh oh… You’ll have to wait more than a little ;) But you can be kept up to date using the RSS feed or even the mail alert (see on the left). What motivates me is that more and more website with a lot in common with what I am starting begin to appear on the web (see WeddingWire, ZankYou or Weddinic to name a few). This means there is a real need for such tools. Hopefully, they are all lacking some killer features !
